IBM Social Media Policy Review

Hey all,

Just read through IBM’s social media policy. It was filled with a good amount of information and ideas that I think would be useful in looking at our own policy. I have listed some of the key ideas that I took away from reading their policy.

1. They expected all of their employees to follow common business and ethical protocols.

2. Each individual employee was responsible for all information they publish on the internet, regardless of what social media platform they employed.

3. It was important for employees to use a disclaimer when they published anything.  It was basically “my views are my own and do not reflect the views or goals of the company.”

4. Employees were expected to respect all copyright, fair use, and disclosure laws.

5. This seemed like common sense to me, but it was frowned upon by the company for employees to leak confidental information. It did not matter if the information was about an IBM product or the competition’s.

6. It was imperative to be respectful when posting anything through social media or taking part in a discussion online. Employees should use a calm and professional tone. They should also make sure to cite all the information they post and be the first to correct their mistakes if they made them.

7. Employees should not use client’s information or cite client’s work without expressed approval from the client.

8. Lastly, they made it clear not to use the company’s logo without approval.

Here is the link to their policy

I think this policy is very indepth and would be useful to us. It has a good amount of the information that I had compiled yesterday, but the parts about leaking information and referencing client’s would be a great addition to our policy. I also like the portion about adding a disclaimer to personal posts. What do you all think about the possible additions to our policy and IBM’s policy itself?

Hey guys,

I took the liberty of going ahead and making our mission statement page. I based it around using the recycling idea that we sort of agreed on in class. Let me know what you think.

Benefit the World Social Media Usage Policy

Hey all,

Just looked at some of the links he posted about making a social media usage policy. I read some of the information and compiled a rough outline of what our policy should include.

  1. When working in the social media environment, it is important to disclose the fact that you work for Benefit the World.  If you are posting something about Benefit the World or some other company, identify yourself by name and your position you hold in the company. If you feel strongly about a particular subject or issue, be sure to preface your statement with that fact.
  2. Benefit the World values credibility and honesty. Do not misrepresent the company or post information without verifiable evidence.
  3. Think twice about what you publish on the internet. As a member of Benefit the World, you represent the company and harmful and malicious posts can have a negative impact on the company’s reputation and your employment status.
  4. Do not post any comments or opinions about other companies or people who are in direct legal litigation with Benefit the World.
  5. If you find yourself in a difference of opinion with another member of the social media community, be sure to remain polite. You represent the company and any harmful or misleading posts can have a negative impact on the reputation of Benefit the World.
  6. Use common sense when using social media. Do not violate the privacy or legal regulations for Benefit the World.
  7. Employees should not imply or state that they are representing the company’s opinions in their personal social media posts.

If anyone can think of anything that I have missed or something that we should include, just feel free to add it. I have one interview lined up so far for the assignment and if I do not hear from anyone about the policy, I will conduct the interview based around the current policy.

Another Possible Idea

What about a topic dealing with the water quality issues in the Chesapeake Bay? Looking at the site I have linked below, there have been studies showing high algae concentration in the Bay. We could think of something that could eliminate the algae or filter out causes of the algae, like fertilizers and other chemicals.
